Allah speaks highly of Idris in the Qur'an, describing him as a truthful man and a prophet who was raised to a high station (19:56-57).
Birth and Early Life
Idris was born and raised in Babylon, at a time when people still followed the teachings of Prophet Adam and his son Seth. He belonged to the fifth generation after Adam. He called his people back to the religion of their forefathers, but only a small number listened to him. Most of them turned away. Because of this rejection, Idris and the few who followed him left Babylon and settled in Egypt. There he continued his mission, calling people to justice and fairness, teaching them specific prayers, instructing them to fast on certain days, and telling them to give a portion of their wealth to the poor.
His Place Among the Prophets
Idris was the first of Adam's descendants to be given prophethood after Adam and Seth themselves. It is also reported that he was the first person to develop a basic form of writing.
